"I decided to participate in the walk because I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at the age of 33, in July 2004," says Cavanaugh. "I completed treatment in February 2005. My treatment consisted of a lumpectomy, node biopsy, eight weeks of chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments. I will be on hormone suppression therapy at least until I hit the five-year mark."
"I also want to be able to share my experience with newly diagnosed women who are afraid and need to know that it's going to be okay and what to expect," adds Cavanaugh.
No matter what your reason for walking, the Komen Foundation is always looking for motivated women to join in walks across the country. As Brady says, "Breast cancer awareness is not just for October, nor is it just for those of us with a family history. It is everyday, for everyone.”
