Itís that time of year again. It seems every place we turn someoneís coughing, blowing their nose or rubbing anti-bacterial gel into their hands. While many of us like to get cozy and spend our winter weekends curled up on the couch with a good book or movie, itís always more enjoyable when done by choice, not mandated by a cold or flu. Whether youíve already been hit with winterís biggest downer or youíre trying to avoid it, here are five tips to prevent and get over a cold.

1. Wash Your Hands
Yes, anti-bacterial gel is awesome and a must when on the subway where you canít access a sink, but be careful not to use it as a substitute for soap and warm water. When colds are in the air, wash your hands multiple times a day especially before eating. Just donít forget to moisturize especially before going to bed so you donít dry out your hands.

2. Swap Your Morning Coffee for Green Tea
Whether youíre the one under the weather or youíre around people who are itís important to up your daily intake of antioxidants. Green Tea is known for being high in antioxidants and is easy to substitute for coffee during winter. (Most green tea contains zero calories!) If tea isnít your thing make sure you up your antioxidant dosage somehow Ė broccoli, spinach, and oranges are all powerful immune system boosters.

3. Make Garlic Your New Best Friend
True, a large intake of garlic may keep people from getting too close to you, but if youíre already sniffling and sneezing, truthfully, they probably donít want to be near you anyway. It goes way back to ancient times but even studies nowadays suggest garlic is a big helper when it comes to preventing and getting over a cold as it is contains compounds that have potent antibacterial effects and prevent germs from reproducing and growing.

4. Liquid Up
Unlike the flu where you can take antibiotics to help stop it, a cold has to run its course. So the goal really is to speed that process up and one of the best ways to do that is by increasing your intake of liquids. Now weíre not talking coffee, soda or cocktails (though many of our grandmothers swore by hot toddies) weíre talking water, tea, juice. Smoothies like the cold stomping smoothie are a great way to combine blueberries and other fruits high in antioxidants and liquids.

5. Chill Out
Whether youíre around people who are under the weather, you feel youíre coming down with something, or you are flat-out sick itís time chill out. Lack of sleep, stress and over doing it of any kind is a sure way to invite colds and keep them around. Though your brain may be telling you the work report canít wait or that it wonít hurt you to just swing by the party for a couple hours nowís the time to do nothing but rest. Though we rarely like to admit it, when it comes to R&R being the most important to taking good care of our bodies, our mothers really did know best.
