Step 4 - Hit the pavement.
Cold calling is still an acceptable and effective means of uncovering potential positions. Many companies keep resumes and applications on file for future positions and review them first in hopes of discovering hidden talent. Research, target and make contact with prospective companies by visiting their establishments in person. Don’t forget to be polite and introduce yourself to the receptionist, as her first impression of you may be the determining factor that gets you in the door.
Step 5 - Consider temporary work.
A temporary or short-term position can lead to a permanent job for the hardworking individual. Temporary jobs offer a great opportunity to learn new skills and get your foot in the door of a company that may have a position available later on. Most temporary agencies require that all applicants partake in standard tests for reading, writing and, often, data-entry. Don’t let these tests discourage you from connecting with some great job prospects.
Step 6 - Register with your local trade organization.
Many industries have a governing trade organization to help members keep abreast of new developments, regulations and events. Invest in a membership in your occupational trade organization and stay attuned to the industry. Make use of the organization’s membership directory and contact other members for upcoming projects or job availability.
