When Morgan was considering a run for office, she was afraid that her gender and youth would hurt her chances of winning. Although she met with some opposition at first, she is now respected in the assembly as a champion for education and health care rights.
“The male politicians in the assembly sometimes don’t see women at the same level as them,” says Morgan. “But when the women stick together, we actually work across party lines and get a lot more done.”
“As a female, you have to prove that you’re more than a pretty face and that you actually know what you’re talking about,” agrees Nagatani. “To be a young woman on the Hill, you have to be very capable.”
