At a time when higher education was reserved for men of the Church of England, a group of disillusioned academics decided to break with the establishment and founded University College London. UCL, as students know it, was the first university in England to admit men, women and social minorities on equal terms and has a long history of academic landmarks. These days the school is the largest of 20 self-governing institutions united under the University of London Federation and a major center of international research in everything from molecular medicine to Slavic languages. On top of all that, the campus sits in the heart of central London, just around the corner from the famous West End. Savvy Miss spoke with second-year student Koohinor for a little insight on studying at London’s leading college.

SM: The United Kingdom has lots of famous universities; what made you decide on UCL?
Kohinoor: I knew that I wanted to go to an established university with an excellent academic reputation that would be recognized worldwide. After looking at past and recent [rankings] UCL was consistently in the top five of the country, which assured me that my degree would be appreciated in years to come. The famous alumni were also an incentive! [UCL boasts alumni like Ghandi, Alexander Graham Bell, Mary Nighy and the members of the band Coldplay.]
