SM: What is your focus? Have your studies prepared you enough for jumping into the career pool?
Kohinoor: I study English Language and Literature. With my course being art-based it has not prepared me entirely for a career. Had I studied Law or Medicine I would know the direct route I wanted to go in.
SM: Is the university actively involved in helping students plan their futures?
Kohinoor: A lot of the time you have to be independent and find things yourself, like the career advisors. The University of London, as a whole, has very helpful career services where they will personally advise you. There are also regular career fairs where you can meet recruiters and get an idea about what companies are looking for.
SM: What are a few of your favorite things about UCL?
Kohinoor: I like that the courses are demanding; if it were easy I would not
feel as satisfied with my progress. My favorite part of the course is the one-on-one tutorials— your hard work pays off [and] you feel like you have achieved something.
SM: What are a few of your not-so-favorite things?
Kohinoor: The cost of living!
SM: London is a huge city with lots going on, so surely there must be heaps of fun things to do at UCL.
Kohinoor: I come from a small town, so to move to Central London has been exciting. Absolutely everything is on your doorstep! There are tons of extracurricular activities; it’s just a matter of trying to fit all you desire into the time you have. There are 140 [university] societies ranging from debating to dance, juggling to religious groups. If you can’t find the society you are after, the [Student] Union will help you create it.
