SM: What’s the atmosphere on campus like?
Julie: The vibe of the campus is really laid back, people wear what they want, there’s a bowling center and tons and tons of places to eat.
SM: What type of housing is offered at Texas?
Julie: It’s so big that people do everything. The dorms on campus are pretty bad. They’re really small, cramped quarters. But I lived off campus in an all-girl dorm that was private. It was great! It had like 3 pools, wonderful food [and] each room was big with its own bathroom.
SM: Can you choose to live on or off-campus?
Julie: Yes, you can choose. You can even live in an apartment if you want to. There’s this area called West Campus, which is like Isla Vista in Santa Barbara and it’s just blocks and blocks of students. You can walk or ride your bike to class from there.
SM: Do you feel safe on campus?
Julie: It’s so big [that] there are always people [around], so there’s never a problem. Plus there are emergency phones. But just being a smart girl, I’d never walk on campus by myself at night.
SM: Do you think it’s difficult to make friends at Texas?
Julie: I think it’s really easy to make friends as a freshman because everyone’s in the same boat. Everyone wants to make friends. I think it would be harder [to make friends] transferring into Texas [as a] sophomore or junior.
SM: What about Texas brings out the school pride?
Julie: Sports. All of our sports are great. We have an amazing basketball team, we won the Rose Bowl for Football, [and] our golf and tennis teams rank high. Everyone goes to the games. People stand in line for hours sweating to get tickets. We have hardcore school pride.
