(NOT) A Boy Crisis.
Conservatives have been quick to peg women’s achievements as a “boy crisis.” Even left-leaning news outlets have run articles on the plight of males in “female-dominated” schools. One article detailed young men so discouraged from their school work that they holed away in their rooms, playing video games until they were advised to drop out. Puh-leez. We’ve all seen a guy who was annoyed when a girl got a very selective internship or the highest test grade in class—but we know that he didn’t retire to his room to drown his troubles in Nintendo and then spend his life hovered over a fry-cooker.
“Women's gains in education have not come at the expense of men,” says Dr. Hill. “Men are going to college more than ever before. The rise has simply been faster among women.”
What guys really think.
Brendan Ballou, a sophomore philosophy major at Columbia University, isn’t suffering because of women’s success and he says most guys aren’t either. “I don't know how much of this is an intimidation issue—it's more of a communication issue. Men and women look at the same book differently, remember different facts and draw different conclusions.” Ballou also highlights another important aspect: “The media is going to spot a crisis in any disparity. Just as we hear about a 'boy crisis' in undergraduate education, the media talks about a similar 'women's crisis' in the graduate levels.” And no, none of Ballou’s friends are so neglected that they’ve mastered every Xbox game on the market while cowering the corner of their dorm rooms.

| Even though gals are on a roll, I do think that there are still places that we need to go. There is a significant difference in the number of men compared to the number of women in science- especially the physical sciences like physics and math. Although there women are definitely making ground, there are still more places to go. So get out there ladies! | |
