Inspect the tires.
To check the depth of the tread, stick a penny into the tread with Lincoln 's head pointing toward you. If the top of Lincoln 's head is visible, the tires will need to be replaced soon. Check all four tires in various spots across the full width of the tread; if the tires have worn unevenly, the alignment should be checked.

Listen to the engine.
Loud tapping or knocking sounds from inside the engine may indicate serious problems; soft tapping or clicking sounds may simply mean that the valve clearances need to be adjusted.

Look at the exhaust.
Blue, black or white smoke in the exhaust indicates internal engine problems, which will require major repairs.

Tips for Purchasing a New Car: While Test Driving the Car

Check the steering.
A shimmy - rapid back-and-forth motions in the steering wheel - simply indicates that the wheels need to be balanced. A strong pull to either side means that the suspension needs to be aligned.

Check the brakes.
The brake pedal should not feel mushy, and the brakes should respond quickly when the pedal is depressed.
