When you moved into your new apartment, you hung a few pictures on the bare white wall, put out some potpourri, and bought an antique “inspired” table for your living room. But now the pictures aren’t so you, the potpourri doesn’t smell like it used to and somehow that cool antique table has become a storage spot for old copies of The Times.

So to help you get out of this rut, we enlisted the help of Michael Moloney, renowned decorator of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and came up with seven easy ways to revamp your apartment.

1. Make a statement.
Painting an entire room can be daunting, but creating one statement wall will liven up your room—with less work. “Paint makes the biggest difference,” Michael says. “It’s easy, it’s quick, and it’s inexpensive.” Yellow is a great color to welcome your guests or opt for a red if you want to add some passion. Make the commitment, and if you don’t like it, Michael suggests just painting it back. “It only takes fifteen minutes!”
