hand and foot massages

Hand and foot massages are two of the most relaxing and easily learned massages that you can give. By using simple techniques, you can improve circulation and help relieve stress. And, while you’re at it, teach your partner so they can give you one in return!

Choose your lotion.
Stick with lotions, creams and oils specifically designed for hand and foot massage. Commercial hand and foot lotions are formulated to absorb quickly and will not offer you the appropriate “glide.” Massage creams can be found at most health food stores. If you are leaning toward oils, look for 100% organic cold-pressed almond, sesame or grapeseed varieties.

For an added treat, place the bottle of oil in hot—but not boiling—water for a few minutes to warm the oil. You can also add 2-3 drops of 100% pure lavender essential oil to increase relaxation and soothe the skin.

Set the tone.
A relaxing environment is a very important element to a good hand or foot massage. Try to reduce sound and lights as much as possible before you start.

Ready your body and mind.
Before you begin, take a few deep breaths and clear your mind of distractions. Relax your neck and shoulders. Apply a small amount of oil or lotion to the palm of your hand and then rub your hands together briskly.

HAND MASSAGE

  1. Take the hand you are massaging gently in both of your own. With a gliding movement spread the lotion across the entire hand, front and back.
  2. Still holding the hand, use your thumbs to trace gentle, upward circles over the wrist and between the bones of the hand. Bring your thumbs together and slide your hands out to the sides of the hand in a “spreading” movement.
  3. Take the thumb between your own thumb and index finger. Working from the knuckle out to the fingertip, massage the thumb gently between your own with small circular movements. Repeat this motion on each finger. Be careful not to squeeze the joints.
  4. Turn the hand over and use your thumbs to massage the palm, using small circular movements. Holding the recipients hand in one of your own, curl your other hand into a loose fist and massage the palm with your knuckles.
  5. Gently stroke the hand, front and back. Repeat on the other hand.
