When it comes to meeting guys, I’m generally up for anything—online dating, set-ups, the bar scene—but the grocery store? This was a first. Since I had nothing to lose and my fridge was empty I decided to accept the challenge.

Beneath the fluorescent glow of the supermarket lights, I began my quest. Thinking of myself as a savvy, single Nancy Drew, I hunted for clues that would indicate which guys might already be unavailable. Scanning the male shoppers, I concluded that engagement or wedding rings are the easiest sign—other than that, only a conversation could reveal his actual status. So, when I spotted a ringless man in the cereal aisle, I flashed him a flirty smile. He smiled back. But, just as I took a step in his direction, a girl appeared and quickly grabbed his arm. Taken. Be very careful of girlfriends lurking in the aisles. The best way to spot a single guy: They look the most confused.
