That’s a really tough situation. I’m not even close to being an expert in the ways of love and relationships, but I can offer my advice as a guy and I can relay a similar experience. I lived on the island of Maui for a couple years and—though my plan was to spend only a brief time there—I found myself in a relationship that I felt really bad about leaving behind when it came time to come home. My only advice (from a guy’s perspective) is that if you riddle him with guilt, he may wind up resenting you for it.

I do think it’s fair to ask where you stand, because at this point it seems like an elephant in the room. However you should be prepared for any outcome. You also might want to determine, in advance, whether or not you can simply enjoy each other’s time for the next year or if you need to move on in search of something more long term. I’d say no matter what, try and leave it on good terms with no guilt trips, ‘cause it sounds like you both share a great love and that could last a lifetime… even if you both move on.
