Cause of Injury: Lodged Foreign Objects

A 29 year old female presented with an eight hour history of difficulty in removal of a battery operated vibrator introduced per anus for autoeroticism. At presentation she was only able to pass small amounts of flatus per rectum and complained of lower abdominal discomfort. –The Internet Journal of Surgery.

The anal cavity is a particularly sensitive and often misused zone. “The anal sphincter, the muscle that’s around the anus, isn’t meant to expand that much so sometimes you can get tears in the muscle,” says Gynecologist Dr. Banooni. But still, many feel the need to test its limits. One of the worst things you can attempt to insert are spheres. Although “pearl chains” intended for sexual purposes are relatively safe, a single ball does not naturally fit into the anus and is destined to get stuck, resulting in a not so pleasant trip to the E.R., says Gynecologist and Medical Researcher Dr. Seibel.

The most important rule when using sex toys is to avoid objects not intended for sexual purposes. Dr. Seibel has seen a lot of misuse in his day. “People have even used glass sometimes. Everyone’s judgment isn’t always very sound.”

Injury Prevention Tip: Use balls for sports.

Sex may not always be sexy (especially when you have a bright red eye), but Dr. Banooni, assures us “[Sex is] a very natural thing, and it’s very difficult to get hurt.”  That’s at least a little bit comforting. Good luck out there.
