There are unhealthy side effects to skipping periods.
MYTH. In 2003, the FDA approved Seasonale, a pill which produces just four periods per year. The same effect can be achieved by skipping the placebo week in conventional birth control pills and continuing on to a new pill pack. But is there anything unhealthy about not “going with the flow” each month? Experts say no. “The concept of having a withdrawal bleed or ‘period’ once a month was a decision made to make women feel that they were having normal cycles on the pill,” says Dr. Rahimian. “It’s absolutely safe to take the pill continuously.”

The pill can make you a hormonal basket case.
MYTH. When I started the pill, I felt overly emotional, highly keyed up and even a bit dizzy. Fortunately, within a week or so, I was back to normal. But what about women who claim the pill puts their psyches on a roller coaster? “It’s possible for the pill to affect your hormone balance and cause mood swings,” says Dr. Rahimian. “However, for many people, it has the reverse effect. We are now using some birth control pills to help reduce the symptoms of PMS and PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder).”
