When a Savvy Miss member had the following question, we turned to Cathy Winks for her expert opinion. What is a female condom? How does it work? Is it the same as a regular condom? Is it safe? The female condom is a contraceptive and safer-sex tool made out of polyurethane—a stronger, thinner, but less elastic material than latex. It’s been approved for use in the U.S. since 1992, and you’ll find it in pharmacies under the brand name “Reality” or, more recently, “FC Female Condom.”
Unlike the traditional condom that’s designed to fit snugly over a penis, the female condom is looser fitting and
you get to wear it. It’s a sheath of polyurethane about 6 inches long with flexible rings on each end. The smaller inner ring is sealed, the larger outer ring is open. If you’ve ever used a diaphragm or cervical cap, you’re a good candidate for trying out a female condom. It’s not a good choice for any woman who’s uncomfortable feeling around inside her own vagina!
Here’s how it works: You squeeze the smaller ring into a half-moon shape, insert the condom into your vagina (taking care to keep the sheath from twisting too much) and position the inner ring against your cervix. The larger open ring hangs below your vulva. Your partner slides his penis into the sheath, and you’re all good to go. Some men report enjoying the female condom more than traditional condoms because their penis isn’t as constricted.
Is it safe? Sure, provided you use it correctly. The most common problem, given the baggy nature of this device, is making sure your partner’s penis is inserted into the condom rather than between the condom and your vaginal wall.
