When a Savvy Miss member had the following question, we turned to Cathy Winks for her expert opinion.

What is a female condom? How does it work? Is it the same as a regular condom? Is it safe?

The female condom is a contraceptive and safer-sex tool made out of polyurethane—a stronger, thinner, but less elastic material than latex. It’s been approved for use in the U.S. since 1992, and you’ll find it in pharmacies under the brand name “Reality” or, more recently, “FC Female Condom.”

Unlike the traditional condom that’s designed to fit snugly over a penis, the female condom is looser fitting and you get to wear it. It’s a sheath of polyurethane about 6 inches long with flexible rings on each end. The smaller inner ring is sealed, the larger outer ring is open. If you’ve ever used a diaphragm or cervical cap, you’re a good candidate for trying out a female condom. It’s not a good choice for any woman who’s uncomfortable feeling around inside her own vagina!
