Do you ever find yourself being overly critical or beating yourself up? We all have a voice inside telling us we’re good, bad, or in the right or wrong, and with fewer distractions these days, many of us are noticing this “Inner Critic” coming in even louder than usual.

The truth is, having an inner critic is normal — so don’t feel bad or be hard on yourself about it!

That said, it’s always a good idea to speak kindly about yourself (outloud and in your head). So if you’re ready for that loving, supportive voice to take over the mic, here are some ways to calm your inner critic and allow your inner champion to shine through.

Show yourself self-compassion. Treat yourself to a cup of tea or coffee and take a moment to think about why you love yourself. (Write it down, too, if you’re in the mood.) If self-criticism comes up, acknowledge it, and say to yourself, “No one is perfect, and I choose to love and accept myself.” Then get back to the self-praise!

Learn your inner critic triggers. Does that mean voice pop up whenever you’re running late? Or when you have a forgetful moment? Make note of what causes your  negative voice to stir, so you can be ready with a comeback, like “Don’t even go there.”

Ask yourself … “Would I say this to a friend?” We often treat our loved ones much nicer than we treat ourselves, and that’s not OK. So if you say something really biting to Y-O-U, ask yourself, “Would I say this to a friend?” If the answer is no, then it’s time to put that thought behind you.

Meditate on the regular. We talk about meditation a lot around here — because it’s amazing! Even five minutes a day helps you feel more positive, so if you haven’t already, make room in your morning schedule to get comfy and sit for a few minutes in silence.

When you notice a negative thought come in, take a deep breath and tell yourself, “You can let that thought go.”

While we all have an inner critic, make it a goal to keep yours as far in the background as possible. When you don’t have a voice inside your head that’s actively working against you, you’ll feel so much more confident and at peace.

Here’s to a happy, calm, more loving you!

XO,
