Chances are there’s something you’ve been wanting to learn (playing the piano, speaking French, salsa dancing?), but for some reason or another, you still haven’t gone for it. It could be a lack of time, fear of failing, or even anxiousness about being a beginner or “bad” at something.

But being a lifelong learner opens you up to new experiences and adventures, and being a beginner at something — while uncomfortable — is huge for your personal growth.

Plus, your brain is a muscle and it needs a workout just like the rest of you, and when you learn new skills, it literally makes your brain grow. This can have major long-term benefits for your memory and well-being!

This weekend, challenge yourself to pick something you’ve been wanting to learn and start going for it. Need a little inspiration? You can:

  • Channel your inner Julia Childs and sign up for a cooking class. Then plan a dinner party and serve up what you’ve learned for your family and friends.

 

  • Start learning a new language. Choose something you can use in your daily life or something you can use when traveling somewhere you’ve always wanted to go. Then plan a trip to practice your skills!

 

  • Try crafting, like knitting or needlepoint.

 

  • Tap into your creativity with something like pottery or water-color painting.

 

  • Learn some new technology, like Photoshop or coding. Maybe you’ll score a promotion or start a side hustle.

 

  • Tackle something that gets your body moving like tap dance, salsa, tennis or golf. Or, go for a musical pursuit, like piano or guitar.

 

  • Do something just for fun, like juggling or magic. Learning doesn’t always have to serve a bigger purpose. 😉

 

You can find trainings for almost anything online or check out in-person classes in your community. What’s most important is you sign up, show up and have fun with it.

You don’t need to strive for perfection and you shouldn’t expect to master your new skill in one weekend. Learning something new takes practice. And as the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.”
