As much as you may try to live the optimistic life, do any of these thoughts ever pop into your head?

There’s no way I could do that.

I don’t think _______ will ever happen for me.

I’m just not good enough.

Maybe in my next lifetime!

We’re human and negative thoughts happen. We have to keep in mind though, when we talk smack about ourselves or indulge thoughts that doubt our capabilities it hurts our productivity as well as our self-esteem.

With all the goal setting and planning that comes with the excitement of a new year, nixing negative thinking will make it that much easier for you to accomplish your goals and live the life you truly want.

Now that 2019 has officially begun, let’s kick it off right by saying, “So long self-doubt and hello confidence!” Think of self-doubt as an old pair of heels that pinch your toes, take up space in your closet and quite frankly aren’t even that fashionable anymore. If they’re not serving you, why not ditch them?

Do the same with those destructive thoughts that take up space in your head and hurt your ambitions. Instead of doubting yourself try:

  • Creating a self-confidence mantra to banish thoughts that hold you back. For example, if you start to think, “There’s no way I can get this done,” exchange it with the words, “I am capable and I can do this.” Say it, sing it, think it and repeat often.
  • Keep your cool. When you’re nervous about something — a person, situation or a long to-do list — that’s when self-doubt often goes into overdrive. Keep your nerves at bay by taking a moment for meditation or deep breathing. Have a little more time? Take a walk in nature or do some yoga (if you can’t find a class nearby there are tons of free classes on YouTube).
  • Trust in your know-how and remind yourself that you have what it takes to get things done. You’re here for a reason and you really can be, have or do anything you set your mind to.

Don’t forget: Thoughts become things and when you let self-doubt get out of control it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Continue thinking that you can’t do something, have something or be someone, and there’s a likely chance it will play out that way.

It’s a new year, and to make it a great year, recognize that self-doubt doesn’t serve you and let it go. Be aware of that inner mean girl who can overtake your mind and tell her it’s time to move on.
